Have you wondered about our logos?

Graphic Designer René Leake donated her time and talents ...

She worked with our board of directors in 2006 and with their influence, created our two logos. Yes, there are two. One formal, one informal.

Both designs were based on research René did on graphic motifs of the nineteen-teen's and nineteen-twenty's. Artistic elements that would have been prevalent during the time the neighborhood was established were incorporated. These could have been found in fabrics, home decor - especially stencils, ironwork, pottery, etc.

René was involved in the design originally because her cousin Jenny lived in the neighborhood and at the time, René was looking for a home in our neighborhood. Unfortunately, she was not able to relocate here, but we still enjoy her logos created for us!

René received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UNC-Charlotte. She has worked as a graphic artist and art director for seven years. Currently she works for The Awen Group, a small marketing firm located in Shelby, NC. Her cousin Jenny along with husband Jonathan and their wonder-dog Flash remain great neighbors on West Fifth Avenue.

  • Our Informal Logo
We loved the central focus of the tree as we cherish the prized canopy of mature trees in our neighborhood and the roots tap into the solidity of our history. The board decided to have one informal logo for printing on t-shirts, mugs, etc. and anything expressive of our vibrant neighborhood.

  • Our Formal Logo
This other, more formal looking logo became just that – our official logo of our board, and is used in correspondence and official print documents of the board. Kind of like an insignia, its scroll design gives a nod to the tangle of tree roots but is reminiscent of the decorative ironwork gracing so many homes and fencing in the district.
